Mouse and Keyboard Support Coming to Xbox One

Razer Mouse and Keyboard Coming to Xbox One

Xbox One users are finally going to be getting official support for mouse and keyboard with Razer tasked with manufacturing the official peripherals. This news comes from a post on the official Xbox News Website by Jason Ronald (Xbox Director of Program Management).

A heated debate on maintaining fairness in online games will now begin with this announcement of Xbox mouse and keyboard support.

This topic will likely bring with it a heated debate as it is widely accepted that using a mouse and keyboard in first person shooter games allows for pin point accuracy to a degree that controllers struggle to compete with. Mouse and keyboard support will not be automatically applied to all Xbox titles. Instead the final decision on whether to support this new hardware or not will be down to individual developers.

With this new input support at the platform level, developers can now build mouse and keyboard support in their games if and how they choose. It’s important to note that mouse and keyboard support for games is added on a title-by-title basis, entirely at developers’ discretion. For all other titles, nothing changes. Mouse and keyboard input is not enabled by default for games. Each development team knows their titles best and we support them in creating the right experience for their games as they see fit, to ensure an optimal and fair gaming experience.

With mouse and keyboard support coming to the Xbox One, developers will have to look at how to maintain fairness especially in competitive games like Overwatch. There has been some discussion on splitting controller and mouse and keyboard users into different lobbies. The main issue with this is splitting a games playerbase is never a good idea. We have only just started to see AAA titles moving away from selling map packs. My personal opinion on this is you will need to keep them separate. I don’t like the idea of splitting the playerbase. That said having mixed lobbies could be devasting to a games online community if they feel mouse and keyboard have an unfair advantage.

Warframe the free to play loot shooter, is to be the first title mouse and keyboard support will be tested on.

I started my gaming career young boy playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive. After that I got a Playstation and can still remember that mind blown feeling. Like many others in my generation my teen years were consumed by World of Warcraft. I fell in love and still to this day love MMORPG's. Over the years I purchased gaming magazines to read the latest review. As time passed I began noticing the quality going downhill, and games being given high scores only to be total crap. This is where Ask A Gamer comes in. I wanted to give something back to gaming and at the same time provide quality content with the key principle being honesty no matter what.
